Bitcoin Spot Trading Volume Hits Eight-Month Low as Liquidity Dries Up

Per K33's July derivatives report, Bitcoin spot volume is tracking toward its weakest monthly reading since November 2023. The drop extends across derivatives, with CME open interest pinned near multi-year lows and perpetual funding compressed to thin levels.

Bitcoin Spot Trading Volume Hits Eight-Month Low as Liquidity Dries Up

Liquidity contraction is the dominant signal.

Derivatives State

  • CME BTC OI: Ranged 95,000–102,000 BTC over the past week; closed at 100,025 BTC ahead of July futures expiry.
  • Annualized futures basis: Drifted to just below 5%. August contracts traded at a 0.4% premium to July.
  • Perpetual OI: Held around 300,000 BTC through the month.
  • Total futures + perps OI: $32.1 billion (508,000 BTC), down 2.1% over seven days.
  • Funding rates: Mostly 5–7%, with several intervals touching near 0%.
  • 1-month 25-delta options skew: Fell to 6.28 on July 23 — lowest in six months — before partial recovery on the BTC pullback.

Open interest compression across both CME and offshore venues reduces the depth of any directional move. Thin books amplify slippage on algo entries and widen the gap between signal and fill.

ETF Flows and Spot Demand

Per SoSoValue data, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $205 million in net inflows for July — the weakest monthly total since product launch.

  • May: −$2.43 billion outflows.
  • June: −$4.52 billion outflows.
  • July: +$205 million (record-low inflow).

BTC traded near $64,800, +0.5% over 24 hours. Year-to-date return sits near −26%; price is approximately 50% below the October high above $126,000.

Ethereum funds pulled in $342.85 million in July — near April's level — while SOL and XRP ETFs saw inflows of approximately $13.82 million and a fourth straight month of positive flows, respectively.

Carry Trade Compression

Glassnode's weekly note frames the environment: US Treasuries are out-yielding the crypto carry trade for only the second time on record. Spot volume prints at multi-year lows. Exchange flows remain quiet. When the risk-free rate dominates the funding yield, basis-narrowing strategies lose their edge. Capital rotates to duration.

Parameters to Monitor

  • Funding rate drift: A sustained move below 5% signals further deleveraging.
  • CME OI floor: A break below 95,000 BTC would mark a new multi-year low.
  • ETF daily net prints: Sub-zero days in early August would confirm a structural outflow regime rather than a pause.
  • Options skew re-expansion: Above 10 on the 25-delta 1-month would indicate rising demand for downside protection.

Risk asymmetry currently favors mean-reversion traders over breakout systems. Low volatility compresses signal-to-noise on momentum strategies; reduced OI increases the cost of position scaling. Adjust size inputs accordingly until at least one of the above parameters inflects.
